Unfortunately, there is no definitive list of plants resistant
to deer browsing. If the deer population is large, the territory
they have to roam is small, and/or the understory has been overbrowsed, the deer will eat just about
anything, including plants that are poisonous to them. However,
some plants can deter deer from eating them based on being
strongly aromatic which confuses the deer and they will
generally eat somewhere else. Other plants are coarse or hairy,
prickly or have milky, sticky sap and the deer rarely eat these
plants. A few other plants may be browsed by deer but they grow so
fast or spread so much that they will still survive and still
remain
attractive.
Deer
can damage a plant in two different ways: by eating the foliage
to the browse line (up to about 5-1/2 feet), or the bucks can
polish the fuzz from their antlers on small saplings. If you
have antler rubbing, it is best to protect young trees with wire
cages or other deer fence.
